This contribution focuses on the questions, what makes a company to
switch to a workflow management system, what does this process mean for
a company? What are the characteristics of a workflow management system
that serves as an instrument of organizational change, not just as a tool
for a change in (computer) technology?
Reader expecting final answers or new "one-way-best" recipes will be
disappointed. But it will become evident why no algorithm for successful
introduction and usage of workflow management technology in organizations
exists and why some of today's systems are not yet prepared for supporting
organizational change.
This text comprises finding of the recent work of the production systems

cooperation with the working group Modelling in Sociotechnical Systems
of the special interest gropup EMISA (Development Methods for Informations
