From ancient Olympia ...

In modern Greece, the ancient ideal of the Olympic spirit was not completely forgotten. In 1838, the municipality of Letrini, an area near to ancient Olympia, decided to revive the Olympic Games. According to their plans, the games would take place every four years in the town of Pyrgos. As there is no other information about these games, historians do not believe that they ever took place. Still, this information is very important because it shows the desire of modern Greeks to continue their ancient culture as soon as the Greek state was founded.
