THE STATUE OF ZEUS

It was created by the famous sculptor Pheidias who made the statue of Athena Parthenos for the Acropolis of Athens. Zeus crowned with a wreath of olive and seated on a throne, held a sceptre topped with an eagle in his left hand, and a Victory in his right.

The statue was made of wood, but it was covered with ivory and gold sheets. The face was made of ivory, whereas the hair, the beard and the sceptre were made of gold. The throne of the father of the gods and the base of the statue were decorated with painted mythical scenes, deities, demons and heroes in gold, ebony and precious stones.

This was the most famous statue of antiquity, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Although we have a description of it by Pausanias and several coins, nothing of it has been preserved. After the end of the Olympic games (AD 393), it was transferred to Constantinople, where it was destroyed by fire in AD 475
