Abstract

Information models using constructs such as entities and relation-ships give the enterprise administrator high level tools for enterprise description. However, it is still possible that with a diverse group of administrators, managers analysts, programmers, etc., a single information model may not be the one desired by all personnel. In addition, a database management system would be much more flexible if it could offer several conceptual data model options.

This paper shows how a database management system can use an underlying conceptual schema consisting of uninterpreted objects, in this case, relations, key declarations (functional dependencies) and subset constraints to provide semantic views involving entities and relation-ships and a host of other views depending on one's preference.
